If you want to get out of town for a few days, here’s an easy Texas Hill Country road trip that feels like an entire vacation without requiring hours and hours in the car. Whether you’re looking for a family getaway, a couples trip, or a weekend with friends, this route combines small-town charm, outdoor adventure, and plenty of unique attractions along the way. You can travel in whatever vehicle you’d like, but we decided to rent an RV from RVshare for the ultimate road trip experience.
RVshare made the entire rental process incredibly simple. Instead of having to drive across town to pick up an RV, we had ours delivered right to our house. That gave us plenty of time to load up our clothes, groceries, and camping gear before hitting the road. If you’d rather skip driving altogether, many RV owners even offer delivery directly to your campground, so your accommodations are waiting for you when you arrive. It’s a great option if you’re new to RVing or simply want a more relaxing vacation.
We left Houston early in the morning and headed west toward the Texas Hill Country. One of the things I love about road trips is discovering places you’d probably never stop at otherwise, and our first destination was the Texas Cotton Gin Museum in Burton.
Texas Cotton Gin Museum
At first glance, I wasn’t convinced a museum about cotton processing would be all that exciting, but it ended up being one of the biggest surprises of the trip. The museum does an excellent job explaining how cotton goes from the field to the fabric we use every day. Inside the exhibit space you’ll find historical displays, antique equipment, and interactive exhibits where you can actually run cotton through a small mill yourself. It’s a hands-on experience that both kids and adults will enjoy.
After exploring the exhibits, we watched a short film about the history of the cotton gin before joining a guided tour of the original operating mill. Seeing the massive machinery up close and learning how each piece worked together was fascinating. The enormous engine that powered the mill is impressive on its own, and it’s amazing to think that this equipment once played such an important role in the Texas economy. Admission to the museum itself is free, while the guided mill tour has a small additional fee and is well worth it if you have the time.
From there we continued west to Camp Fimfo Texas Hill Country, our home base for the next couple of days.
Camp Fimfo
Calling Camp Fimfo simply a campground really doesn’t do it justice. It’s more like an outdoor resort with accommodations for just about every style of traveler. Whether you prefer bringing your own RV, renting one, staying in a fully furnished cabin, or even booking one of their unique treehouses, there are plenty of options available.
The list of activities is almost endless. Camp Fimfo is home to Texas’s first and only alpine coaster, where you’ll twist and turn down the hillside while controlling your own speed. Adventure seekers can soar above the Guadalupe River on the zipline, while anyone looking to cool off can spend the day at one of the resort’s two pools. One pool sits high on the hill overlooking the beautiful Hill Country landscape and features a swim-up bar, while the other is located near the family activity area with water slides and another swim-up bar for adults.
Families with younger kids will love the splash zone, playground, mini golf course, and giant lawn games scattered throughout the property. There’s also a hammock area that’s perfect for slowing down with a book or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Throughout the day the activity center offers everything from ceramic painting and arts and crafts to candy bingo and seasonal events, with a mix of complimentary and paid activities. You could easily spend several days here without ever leaving the property.
The following day we headed into nearby Gruene, one of the most charming historic districts in Texas. Walking through Gruene feels like stepping back in time, with its preserved historic buildings, local boutiques, and welcoming atmosphere. Even if you don’t have a specific plan, it’s the kind of place that’s fun to simply wander.

We stopped by the famous Gruene Dance Hall, the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas. Today it serves as both a bar and live music venue, hosting performances throughout the week. Even when there isn’t a show happening, it’s worth stepping inside to appreciate the history and imagine the countless musicians who’ve performed there over the years.
Afterward we explored several of the local shops, including the Gruene General Store. The store is filled with nostalgic candy, Texas souvenirs, homemade fudge, ice cream, old-fashioned soda floats, and unique gifts that make it hard to leave empty-handed.
Since the Texas summer heat was in full force, we decided to escape into the air conditioning at Gruene Haus Escape Rooms. We challenged ourselves with their hardest room and somehow managed to escape with only minutes to spare. It ended up being one of our favorite experiences of the day and provided a nice break from the afternoon temperatures.
River Tubing
No Texas Hill Country getaway would be complete without spending time on one of its famous rivers. The New Braunfels area offers several different tubing experiences depending on what kind of float you’re looking for. The Comal River is known for its popular Tube Chute and more energetic atmosphere, while the Guadalupe River offers a longer, more relaxing float through beautiful scenery.
We chose to spend the afternoon floating the Guadalupe River with Rockin’ R River Rides. Drifting down the cool river surrounded by towering cypress trees was the perfect way to unwind after several days of sightseeing. Whether you’re looking to relax or spend time with friends and family, tubing is one of those classic Texas summer experiences that belongs on everyone’s bucket list.
Stars & Stripes Drive-In
To wrap up the trip, we drove over to Stars and Stripes Drive-In Theatre for a nostalgic evening under the stars. Watching a movie from the comfort of your own vehicle feels like stepping back into another era, and it’s an experience that’s becoming harder to find.
The drive-in has a full diner serving burgers, fries, shakes, and classic movie snacks, so you can grab dinner before the show starts. One of my favorite details was the adorable paper cars they sell. We picked one up separately and filled it with our own food, which made for a fun photo and a unique souvenir from the evening. If you have little kids, they’ll enjoy playing on the playground before the movie starts.
One of my favorite parts about taking this trip in an RV was how convenient it made everything. No matter where we stopped, we always had everything we needed with us. We never had to think, “I wish we had packed that,” or “We left it back at the cabin.” Whether we wanted a change of clothes after tubing, snacks for the drive, extra water, or just a place to relax for a bit, it was all right there. It made exploring so much more enjoyable because we could be spontaneous without worrying about what we’d forgotten.
