The Barrington Living History Farm is part of the Washington-on-the-Brazos Historic Site. Honestly, to me, anything with a hyphenated name like that deserves a second look.
We visited the Barrington Living History Farm the weekend we stayed at Lillian Farms in Chappel Hill. We also visited the Star of the Republic Museum, also on the Washington-on-the-Brazos Historic Site grounds, at the same time. We visited in the summer, so it was pretty hot, and the Star of the Republic Museum made for a nice indoor stop.
The Barrington Living History Farm was once the home of Dr. Anson Jones, the last president of the Republic of Texas. He ran a cotton plantation for ten years after Texas joined the Union. The farm consists of the main house and a number of outbuildings.
In the main house, costumed guides perform tasks that would have typically been done back when the farm was in use. We encountered a few women sewing on the porch who showed us around the house and explained what things were used for.
What we loved most about the farm is how hands-on everything was. There are 1850’s era toys to play with, and our kids were even able to do laundry –1800’s style! (This did NOT lead to them volunteering to do laundry at home – just so we’re clear.)
